Individual Therapy
What to expectWhat should you expect in therapy? What makes it a helpful experience? There are lots of varying styles of therapy, some quite directive, others more emergent.
On the continuum, my style is emergent and non-directive, although there are certainly times that active problem-solving and sharing resources is appropriate and helpful. Mostly though, I see my role as one of holding space and witnessing the poetry of our lives, connecting with you. Together, we search for patterns and try to change the ones that aren’t helpful, celebrate those that are.
I don’t give advice because I sincerely believe you know the answer better than I do. My answers wouldn’t be yours, because all answers are shaped by experiences and baggage. My job is to provide reflection, compassion and clarity so that you can uncover your own answers. I look for patterns and ask questions, but I believe for change to be lasting, it must come from within.
The philosophical backing for my work is found in Relational-Cultural Theory. My practice has been informed and shaped through advanced training at the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute.
Relational Cultural Theory combines current neuroscience with research on relationships and human connection. It helps me make sense of how societal influences impact our relationships– both with ourselves and with the people in our lives. RCT allows me to integrate my experience working with adults with mental illness and an understanding of human development into a working philosophy that promotes healing.
Therapy is not a quick fix. While you may feel better after your first visit, maybe even after committing to visit, it takes time to pick up the patterns and make lasting change. While some people make changes after just a few short visits others might need longer. Some people find that short-term therapy with the option of return “refresher” visits and reconnection is the most helpful option. Just knowing that there is someone out there who already knows your ins and outs can be comforting. We can work together to figure out a plan that fits your needs best.
